Description: Alaska’s Governor appoints one Commissioner and one Commissioner’s alternate. The Governor of the State of Alaska shall submit a list of at least 6 nominees to the President of the United States from which the President will appoint the Commissioner. The U.S Secretary of State designates an Alternate Commissioner from the Governor’s list of 6 nominees.
Function: The Commissioner serves as Alaska’s member of the U.S. Section and the bilateral Pacific Salmon Commission. Under terms of the Treaty, the members of the U.S. Section are one commissioner and one alternate each from Alaska; Washington / Oregon / Idaho; the Pacific Northwest Tribes; and the Federal government. The Pacific Salmon Commission establishes fishery regimes for Pacific Salmon stocks as provided under the terms of the 1999 Pacific Salmon Treaty Revised Annexes. Commissioners are actively involved in negotiating and implementing treaty annexes, resolving disputes, and overseeing the activities of the Pacific Salmon Commission.
Special facts: The Governor shall submit a list of at least 6 nominees to the President of the United States from which the President will appoint 1 Commissioner. The Secretary of State, in consultation with the Secretary of the Interior, designates an Alternate Commissioner for each Commissioner from the Governor’s list of 6 nominees. Panel members who serve as the official of their respective states are appointed by the Governor of that state. The federal government panel members will be appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce. All other member and alternate position nominations from the Governor and security clearance documents from the nominees are to be submitted to and will be appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce.
Compensation: Travel and per diem paid by federal government.
Meetings: Approximately 3 meetings/year, 7-10 days each meeting; and at least 3 local meetings, 2-3 days each.
