Dutch Harbor Remembrance Day is recognized every year on the anniversary of the attack, and honors the military personnel who served and died defending our country, and the Aleut people who died while imprisoned and relocated as a result of the war. “During World War II, my father served on the Aleutian Islands with Castner’s Cutthroats in the Alaska Scouts; I heard many stories about the brave soldiers who served beside him,” Governor Walker said. “Today, I encourage all Alaskans to honor the men and women who died during the attack on Dutch harbor, and the inhabitants of Attu and Kiska, who fell into enemy hands.” Governor Walker signed an executive proclamation recognizing the 76th anniversary of the attack, and declaring June 3 Dutch Harbor Remembrance Day in Alaska. He has also ordered that all state flags be lowered to half-staff at sunrise on Sunday, June 3. Flags should return to full-staff at sunset on the same day.
