WHEREAS, President Ronald Wilson Reagan was a prominent leader who was dedicated to representing American values on the national and global scale; and
WHEREAS, President Reagan was a unique blend of great charisma and integrity. He reshaped national politics with his vision to make a more prosperous, stronger, safer, and more unified nation; and
WHEREAS, at the time he took Office, the nation was disillusioned and hindered by a period of economic strife stricken with high unemployment and tense relations with the Soviet Union. President Reagan devoted significant resources to reducing federal spending, taxes, and the national deficit, as well as to strengthening our national defense and security; and
WHEREAS, internationally, President Reagan’s vision of “strength through peace” and diligent negotiation with Soviet Statesman, Mikhail Gorbachev, led to the creation of the 1987 Intermediate Nuclear Forces Treaty and, eventually, the end of the Cold War; and
WHEREAS, during the later years of his presidency, he worked to stem the tide of the AIDS epidemic by speaking out about the dangers of this newly-discovered, detrimental disease, as well as providing national funding for prevention and treatment research; and
WHEREAS, President Reagan’s strength of character and determination to better our country made him one of the most beloved United States Presidents. His unprecedented level of popularity throughout his two terms as 40th President of the United States has not been surpassed to this day; and
WHEREAS, the legacy of Ronald Reagan is one of hope. His diligence, faith, and vision of a better American future is the embodiment of the American Dream. Today, we honor the 111th anniversary of President Reagan’s birth and the 17 years since his passing.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Mike Dunleavy, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF ALASKA, do hereby proclaim February 6, 2022 as:
Ronald Reagan Day
in Alaska, and ask that all Alaskans reflect on the life, legacy, and many great accomplishments of our country’s 40th President.
