WHEREAS, the well-being of Alaskans is of the utmost importance, and is greatly enhanced through increased awareness of possible threats to personal health; and
WHEREAS, cancer is the second-leading cause of death worldwide, and in Alaska, cancer has been the leading cause of death since 1993. More than 2,000 Alaskans are diagnosed with multiple forms of cancer every year and the annual cost to treat cancer in Alaska exceeds $200 million; and
WHEREAS, there are numerous types of cancer and some are more well-known to the public than others. Prostate Cancer, Breast Cancer, Lung Cancer, and Colorectal Cancer are the four most common types of cancer; and
WHEREAS, Extraskeletal Osteosarcoma is a rare, fast-growing cancer that is primarily composed of bone and cartilage cells, and forms in soft tissue near bones. Pancreatic Cancer is a type of cancer that begins as a growth of cells in the pancreas; and
WHEREAS, because cancer has many forms, Alaskans should be aware of their family’s health history and discuss early screening options with medical providers if they have any genetic or hereditary risk for developing cancer, as the earliest possible detection of any form of cancer is important for ensuring the best prognosis; and
WHEREAS, although the fight against cancer is difficult, we are encouraged by the search for more effective treatments in conjunction with efforts to improve early detection methods through advancements in public policy, research funding, patient services, public education, and general awareness; and
WHEREAS, the hard work and ingenuity of scientists provides hope for those who are, and may be, impacted by cancer.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Mike Dunleavy, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF ALASKA, do hereby proclaim February 4, 2025 as:
Cancer Awareness Day
in Alaska and encourage all Alaskans to educate themselves about the risks of developing cancer, assist in raising awareness about this devastating disease, and support those affected.
