WHEREAS, the well-being of Alaskans is of the utmost importance, and is greatly enhanced through increased awareness of threats to personal health; and
WHEREAS, cancer is the second-leading cause of death worldwide, while in Alaska, cancer has been the leading cause of death since 1993. More than 2,000 Alaskans are diagnosed with multiple forms of cancer every year. The annual cost to treat cancer in Alaska exceeds $200 million; and
WHEREAS, there are so many types of cancer; some more prominent than others. Prostate Cancer, Breast Cancer, Lung Cancer, and Colorectal Cancer are the four most common incidents of cancer; and
WHEREAS, the earliest possible detection of any form of cancer is important for ensuring the best prognosis. Alaskans should be aware of their family’s health history, and discuss early screening options with medical providers if they have any genetic or hereditary risk for developing cancer; and
WHEREAS, every year, more than 13,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer despite the disease being preventable with vaccination and routine screening. Cervical cancer disproportionately impacts vulnerable communities lacking access to

NOW THEREFORE, I, Mike Dunleavy, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF ALASKA, do hereby proclaim February 4, 2022 as:
