WHEREAS, Alaska’s extensive road system provides some of the most beautiful views in the world and make Alaska an ideal location for motorcycle and motor scooter use; and
WHEREAS, many registered motorcyclists, who undergo extensive training and testing in order to obtain a license, call Alaska home and enjoy the roadways Alaska has to offer; and
WHEREAS, two or three-wheel motorists face a higher risk on the road than those operating standard vehicles, and statistics show that those operating vehicles are at fault in a majority of accidents involving a motorcycle or motor scooter; and
WHEREAS, it is imperative that motorists always exercise caution and stay alert while traveling on Alaska’s road systems, and several Alaskan organizations are working to provide the necessary resources for all motorists to be safe drivers; and
WHEREAS, the Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is partnered with the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF), whose mission is to ensure access to quality education and training and to advocate for a safer riding environment, and Alaska Bikers Advocating Training and Education (ABATE) helps support the DMV’s efforts by administering motorcyclist endorsement testing and by offering courses on motorcycle handling and safety; and
WHEREAS, the efforts of DMV, MSF, and ABATE prepare motorcyclists for safe riding; however, an increase in awareness, caution, and observance by drivers is still necessary to improve the safety of our roads for motorcyclists.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Mike Dunleavy, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF ALASKA, do hereby proclaim May 2023 as:
Motorcycle and Motor Scooter Awareness Month
in Alaska, and encourage all Alaskans to renew their commitment to safe driving practices, to watch for motorcyclists and motor scooters, and to be aware of all who share the road.
