WHEREAS, historic preservation is an effective tool for managing growth and development, revitalizing neighborhoods, fostering local pride, and maintaining community character while enhancing livability; and
WHEREAS, historic preservation is relevant for communities across the nation, both urban and rural, and for Alaskans of all ages and walks of life; and
WHEREAS, Alaska has many historic places worth seeing, saving, and celebrating, that provide an integral link and visible reminder of the past; and
WHEREAS, it is important to celebrate the role of history in our lives and the contributions made by dedicated individuals to preserve the heritage that has shaped us as a people. Many Alaskan residents, groups, and organizations work hard to preserve Alaska’s past for posterity; and
WHEREAS, the Alaska Association for Historic Preservation, Inc. is celebrating 40 years as a statewide organization during 2021; and
WHEREAS, the Alaska Association for Historic Preservation is dedicated to the preservation of Alaska’s historic resources through education, promotion, and advocacy, and the theme of National Historic Preservation Month 2021 is “Saving Places: Restore and Reuse Alaska’s Past”.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Mike Dunleavy, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF ALASKA, do hereby proclaim May 2021 as:
National Historic Preservation Month
in Alaska, and encourage all Alaskans to recognize the importance of preserving historical sites and to participate in learning more about the history of this Great State.
