Mental Health Awareness Month

May 1, 2022

WHEREAS, one in 25 adults today live with a variety of mental health disorders and illnesses such as major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, autism spectrum disorders, and a growing number of other debilitating behavioral health conditions; and

WHEREAS, sustaining and supporting an individual’s ability to navigate their environment, societal relationships; adapt to changing situations, and develop healthy coping strategies, are all functions attributed to the state of our mental health; and

WHEREAS, anyone is susceptible to experiencing mental health difficulties, just as we are susceptible to physical health issues and emergencies; and

WHEREAS, addressing complicated mental health needs with coordinated, comprehensive mental health services provides a life line for families and individuals who are struggling with the complex process of locating appropriate treatment protocols; and

WHEREAS, studies suggest that between 10 – 30 percent of people who take medications to treat their mental health disorder will develop a movement disorder called Tardive Dyskinesia. According to the

National Alliance for Mental Illness, one in every four patients receiving long-term treatment with an antipsychotic medication will experience Tardive Dyskinesia; and

WHEREAS, Alaskans must work together to overcome and eliminate the discrimination and stigma that

may deter individuals from seeking consistent support and adequate mental health treatment; and

WHEREAS, mental health providers and professionals, through their unique approach to serving their clients, are effectively prioritizing care to provide assistance to families in improving outcomes.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Mike Dunleavy, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF ALASKA, do hereby proclaim May 2022 as:

Mental Health Awareness Month

in Alaska, and encourage all Alaskans to recognize those affected by mental health issues and the important role that support, acceptance, and mental health services play in enriching our lives.
