DOI Announces Updates on King Cove Road, ANWR Coastal Plain, Ambler Road, and Alaska Native Vietnam-Era Veterans Land Allotments

Today Governor Mike Dunleavy accompanied Department of the Interior Secretary Doug Burgum as the secretary announced four significant developments for Alaska.

Sec. Burgum signed a certificate of exchange to the King Cove Corporation that will enable the State of Alaska to build a road approximately 11 miles long to connect King Cove with Cold Bay. The road will provide the residents of King Cove critical, life-saving access to Cold Bay’s all-weather airport.

Sec. Burgum also signed authorization of Right of Way permits for the Ambler Road, enabling the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority (AIDEA) to advance the project that provide access to the Ambler Mining District.

Sec. Burgum also signed a new Record of Decision for oil and gas development in the Coastal Plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The new ROD effectively returns the status of development in ANWR to where it was before the Biden Administration handcuffed Alaska’s oil industry.

The signing event also featured the culmination of the Alaska Native Vietnam-Era Veterans land allotment program for three Alaska Native Veterans.

“Today’s announcements are historic for Alaska. President Trump and his administration are delivering on promises made to Alaska,” said Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy. “The land transfer for the King Cove Road will save lives, economic opportunities will be unlocked in the Ambler Mining District and ANWR’s Coastal Plain, and Alaska Native Vietnam-era veterans will finally receive land allotments they were promised.”

“For decades, Alaskans in King Cove have asked for a safe land route to critical services in Cold Bay. With the right-of-way now secured, we can move from promise to progress and build the life-saving road connection these communities deserve,” said Alaska DOT&PF Commissioner Ryan Anderson.

“Secretary Burgum said it best: ‘Great things come through innovation, not regulation.’ As the rule of law is upheld and federal overreach ends, Alaska is free to lead with the full backing of the Trump Administration,” said Alaska Attorney General Stephen Cox. “The Ambler Road, the ANWR Coastal Plain, and King Cove Road each secure the access Congress provided for Alaska’s communities and the development of Alaska’s resources. Together they give our State the confidence to fuel the nation with the energy that will keep America strong.”
