Governor Mike Dunleavy is announcing that Alaska Department of Family and Community Services Commissioner Kim Kovol is leaving the Department to join President Donald Trump’s Administration at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
“It has been an honor to serve as the first Commissioner of the Department of Family and Community Services,” said Commissioner Kovol. “I am incredibly grateful to the staff, partners, and communities who have supported our work. Together, we have made meaningful progress for Alaska families, youth, and elders, and I will always be proud of what we have accomplished.”
Governor Dunleavy appointed Kovol as acting commissioner when DFCS launched on July 1, 2022. Throughout her tenure, she laid the foundation for the Department, shaping its mission, advancing key initiatives, and guiding statewide policy development.
“Commissioner Kovol has been a strong and dedicated leader from the very beginning of this Department,” said Governor Dunleavy. “As the first Commissioner of DFCS, she built a foundation focused on service, accountability, and support for Alaska’s most vulnerable populations. I thank her for her service and wish her every success in this next role.”
The Alaska Department of Family and Community Services includes the Division of Juvenile Justice, Alaska Psychiatric Institute, Alaska Pioneer Homes, and the Office of Children’s Services. The mission of DFCS is to provide support, safety, and personal well-being for vulnerable Alaskans.
Deputy Commissioner Tracy Dompeling will assume the role of acting commissioner following Kovol’s departure. Kovol’s last day with the Department will be January 2, 2026.
