WHEREAS, education is the foundation for individual opportunity, family stability and community prosperity, and adult education and family literacy programs play a vital role in ensuring that all Alaskans have the tools they need to succeed; and
WHEREAS, Alaska Adult Education and Literacy programs have been serving Alaskans since 1942 with General Education Development testing that results in a High School Equivalency Diploma, graduating approximately 500 students per year; and
WHEREAS, more than 40,000 Alaskan adults lack a High School Equivalency Diploma, and thousands more seek to improve their literacy, numeracy, digital, and English language skills to advance in careers, and support their families; and
WHEREAS, education and literacy programs assist more than 2,500 Alaskans who receive services annually from 14 adult education programs throughout the State; and
WHEREAS, these programs provide services to communities throughout Alaska, improving lives through education and strengthening our workforce and economy; and
WHEREAS, educators within the these programs positively change the lives of Alaskans by guiding them on the path of furthering their education and employment opportunities; and
WHEREAS, Alaska Adult Education and Literacy programs provide countless benefits to citizens from all backgrounds. These critical programs broaden opportunities for Alaskans and increase their likelihood to create more prosperous careers.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Mike Dunleavy, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF ALASKA, do hereby proclaim September 14 – 20, 2025 as:
Alaska Adult Education and Family Literacy Week
in Alaska and encourage all citizens to recognize the importance of adult learning and family literacy as critical to the success and well-being of individuals, families, and communities throughout Alaska, and to support and participate in these programs.
