Alaska Hydropower Day

WHEREAS, Alaska is a State rich in energy and embraces development of all its resources for the benefit of its people; and

WHEREAS, hydropower is a cornerstone of Alaska’s energy sector, providing 20 percent of in-State electricity; and

WHEREAS, Alaska is home to over 50 hydroelectric facilities, some of which have been powering our State for more than 100 years. These facilities have an installed capacity of more than 480 MW, making hydropower Alaska’s leading renewable energy resource; and

WHEREAS, hydropower is a cost-effective energy resource, and its versatility supports a diverse energy portfolio, provides flexibility to meet evolving energy needs, and enables lower energy costs to Alaskan residents; and

WHEREAS, beyond electricity generation, hydropower infrastructure supports recreational activities, bolsters economic resilience, and enhances the well-being of Alaskans; and

WHEREAS, the hydropower industry in Alaska fosters the development of a skilled workforce, creating employment opportunities, promoting economic growth, and advancing technological innovation; and

WHEREAS, continued development and responsible management of hydropower in Alaska will further enhance Alaska’s energy security, electrical grid resiliency, and affordable baseload power.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Mike Dunleavy, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF ALASKA, do hereby proclaim August 24, 2024 as:

Alaska Hydropower Day

in Alaska and urge all Alaskans to celebrate the vital role hydropower plays in energy security, economic growth, and affordable electricity in Alaska.
