WHEREAS, on this day, 75 years ago, in the midst of World War II, one of the most important battles in history commenced; and
WHEREAS, more than 160,000 brave soldiers, sailors, and airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force invaded the 50-mile stretch of the heavily-fortified French Normandy coastline, to fight against Nazism and oppression; and
WHEREAS, the Battle of Normandy, or D-Day, greatly impacted World War II, setting the Allied Forces at an advantage, and by late August 1944, all of northern France had been liberated; and
WHEREAS, by the following year, the Allies had defeated the Germans, putting an end to World War II; and
WHEREAS, the extraordinary bravery and service of the Allied troops exhibited the finest qualities of our Nation and our Allies. Many who fought that day paid the ultimate price, but many more continued to fight in honor of their fallen comrades, and for the freedoms millions around the world possess today; and
WHEREAS, this year marks the 75th Anniversary of D-Day. We remember and honor all those who risked everything to defeat tyranny, and defend the liberty of the oppressed.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Michael J. Dunleavy, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF ALASKA, do hereby proclaim June 6, 2019 as:
D-Day Remembrance Day
in Alaska, and encourage all Alaskans to reflect on the importance of this day, and to observe this occasion by participating in appropriate activities, ceremonies, and programs designed to honor those who served and sacrificed to liberate Europe and defend America’s freedom and security.
