Chair: Selected by the members, subject to disapproval by the Governor. The chair shall serve for one year or until a successor is selected.

Description: The number of members and composition of the committee must be consistent with 29 U.S.C. 725 and 3001, as amended. Members include DVR recipients; employers of individuals with disabilities; representatives from community rehabilitation programs, the client assistance program, parent education and training programs, the state department of education, the state workforce investment board, tribal vocational rehabilitation programs, the state independent living council, business, industry and labor; a rehabilitation counselor; and individuals who use assistive technology or their family members. Members serve no more than two full terms. Members must be appointed after solicting recommendations from representatives of organizations representing a broad range of individuals with disabilites and organizations interested in individuals with disabilities. In selecting members, the appointing authority must consider, to the greatest extent practicable, the extent to which minority populations are represented on the Council.

Function: The board promotes employment of people with disabilities by creating statewide interest in the rehabilitation/employment of people with disabilities. Serves as the State Rehabilitation Council for Alaska that is required under 29 U.S.C. 725 for the receipt of federal financial assistance. Regularly consults with DVR regarding the development, implementation, and revision of State policies and procedures of general applicability pertaining to the provisions of vocational rehabilitation services. Oversees the activities of the Assistive Technology Advisory Council which provides consumer-responsive, consumer-driven advice to the State for, planning of, implementation of, and evaluation of the activities carried out through the Assistive Technology grant, including setting the measurable goals described in subsection (d)(3) of 29 U.S.C. 31, section 3003.

Special facts: The board submits an annual report to the Governor.

Compensation: Standard Travel and Per Diem No additional compensation.

Meetings: 4 meetings per year; usually once per quarter for 2 days each.
