Support Dog and Cat Adoption Month 2026

Sep 1, 2026

WHEREAS, the State of Alaska values the lives of dogs and cats and supports adoption; and

WHEREAS, a 90 percent save rate of dogs and cats who are unowned will be achieved if more Alaskans seeking a pet choose to adopt from their local animal shelter or rescue group; and

WHEREAS, many loving and healthy animals are waiting for homes in animal shelters and rescue groups throughout Alaska, and many Alaska shelters and rescues implement proven programs and policies to achieve 90 percent which provides alternatives to the unnecessary killing of healthy and adoptable dogs and cats; and

WHEREAS, adoption provides dogs and cats with a second chance at life, helps reduce the strain on overcrowded shelters and rescues, promotes pet adoption, supports animal welfare, and encourages responsible pet ownership within Alaskan communities which residents support; and

WHEREAS, Alaskans should work together to achieve a 90 percent save rate in the state in 2026 and beyond, and animal shelters and rescue groups can do this by collaborating with local partners as well as employing lifesaving programs such as foster care networks, adoption programs, transport between groups, medical and behavioral programs, public education and awareness, and animal socialization programs to prioritize lifesaving.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Mike Dunleavy, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF ALASKA, do hereby proclaim September 2026 as:

Support Dog and Cat Adoption Month

in Alaska and encourage all Alaskans to support adoption and to recognize this special observance that saves lives.
