Older Americans Month

May 1, 2023

WHEREAS, the number of older Americans who call Alaska home continues to rise, and those individuals benefit our communities by sharing their experience, strength, and resiliency; and

WHEREAS, Alaska’s older people are esteemed members of our society, and their wealth of knowledge can become intergenerational wisdom through interactions with family, friends, and neighbors of all ages; and

WHEREAS, the overall quality of life for aging Alaskans can be greatly enhanced when they are encouraged to interact with people of different generations at public and family events, and older members of our communities benefit when they are provided with assistive services, including technology and support systems that allow them to comfortably participate in social activities in our communities; and

WHEREAS, since 1963, May has been designated as the month to recognize and honor older Americans and this year the theme is “Aging Unbound.” This is an opportunity for all of us to explore the many ways to age without regard to stereotypes or expectations; and

WHEREAS, Alaska is committed to maintaining safe and healthy environments, providing access to important services, and ensuring individual choices for older Alaskans.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Mike Dunleavy, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF ALASKA, do hereby proclaim May 2023 as:

Older Americans Month

in Alaska, and encourage all Alaskans to take time to engage with older Alaskans to celebrate their ongoing contributions to our communities.
