WHEREAS, mental health encompasses emotional, psychological, and social well-being, affecting how we think, feel, and act, as well as how we manage stress, connect with others, and make decisions; and
WHEREAS, one in five adults’ experiences mental illnesses each year, such as major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and other debilitating behavioral health conditions and there are nearly 20 percent of children and young people in the United States living with a mental, emotional, developmental, or behavioral disorder; and
WHEREAS, everyone is susceptible to challenges and declines in mental health, just as we are vulnerable to physical health issues, and addressing complex mental health needs through coordinated and comprehensive services provides essential support to individuals and families navigating the difficult process of locating appropriate treatment; and
WHEREAS, suicide remains a leading cause of death in the United States and the second leading cause of death among Alaskans ages 10 to 34, with Alaska consistently ranking among the states with the highest suicide rates per capita; and
WHEREAS Alaskans must unite to address and eliminate the discrimination and stigma surrounding mental health, which deters individuals from seeking consistent support and proper treatment; and
WHEREAS, through their exceptional approach to serving their clients, mental health providers and professionals can assist families with individualized and potentially life-saving care.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Mike Dunleavy, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF ALASKA, do hereby proclaim May 2026 as:
Mental Health Awareness Month
in Alaska and urge all Alaskans to aid those affected by mental health issues and recognize the vital role that support, acceptance, and mental health services play in enriching our lives.
