Governor Mike Dunleavy has approved the appointment of Dr. Deena Bishop as commissioner of the Alaska Department of Education & Early Development (DEED). Dr. Bishop received unanimous approval from members of the Alaska State Board of Education at its July 26 meeting.
“Dr. Bishop is eminently qualified to manage the department and achieve its mission of providing an excellent education for every student every day,” said Governor Mike Dunleavy. “Over the past three decades, she has taught in both rural and urban schools, and was superintendent of Alaska’s two largest school districts. I look forward to working with her on the implementation of the Alaska Reads Act, and other initiatives that will improve educational outcomes for our students.”
Dr. Bishop’s first day as DEED commissioner will be Wednesday, August 9, 2023.
