Cancer Awareness Day

Feb 4, 2020

WHEREAS, the well-being of Alaskans is of the utmost importance, and is greatly enhanced through increased awareness of threats to personal health; and

WHEREAS, cancer is the second-leading cause of death worldwide, while in Alaska, cancer has been the leading cause of death since 1993; and

WHEREAS, there are so many types of cancer; some more prominent than others. Prostate Cancer, Breast Cancer, Lung Cancer, and Colorectal Cancer are the four most common incidents of cancer; and

WHEREAS, the earliest possible detection of any form of cancer is important for ensuring the best prognosis. Alaskans should be aware of their family’s health history, and discuss early screening options with medical providers if they have any genetic or hereditary risk for developing cancer; and

WHEREAS, although the fight against cancer has increasingly become more difficult, we are encouraged by efforts to improve methods of early detection and the search for more effective treatments, through public policy, research funding, patient services, and public education, and awareness; and

WHEREAS, the hard work and ingenuity of scientists provides greater hope for those who are, and may be, impacted by cancer; and

NOW THEREFORE, I, Mike Dunleavy, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF ALASKA, do hereby proclaim February 4, 2020 as:

Cancer Awareness Day

in Alaska, and encourage all Alaskans to become educated about the risks of developing cancer, assist in raising awareness about this devastating disease, and support those affected.
