WHEREAS, Alaska summers bring longer days and many opportunities for outdoor activities enjoyed with family and friends; and

WHEREAS, barbecuing is one such opportunity, being a distinctively American culinary tradition universally identified with summertime, family fun, and the sharing of delicious food with family, good friends, and neighbors; and

WHEREAS, the 15th annual State BBQ Championships take place July 20-21 in Fairbanks. This uniquely Alaskan competition tests the skills and creativity of the most dedicated barbecue cooks in Alaska. Participants can anticipate a menu rich in diversity with countless styles and flavors; and

WHEREAS, this tradition has become a local mainstay for barbecue lovers, who gather this year under the theme, “Your Pit or Mine” to enjoy the summer weather, delicious food, and friendly competition; and

WHEREAS, we encourage Alaskans to take the opportunity throughout the summer to join in the spirit of barbecuing either as a form of culinary art and technique, or simply as a way to enjoy delightful meals and quality time with friends and loved ones.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Michael J. Dunleavy, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF ALASKA, do hereby proclaim July 2019 as:

BBQ Month

in Alaska, and encourage all Alaskans to appreciate the friendships and festivities that can take place around barbecues all over the state.
