WHEREAS, Alaska is a state rich in energy with an abundance of natural resources and remains committed to their responsible development to promote long-term prosperity for all Alaskans; and
WHEREAS, hydropower plays a vital role in Alaska’s energy landscape, supplying nearly 29 percent of the state’s electricity in 2025 and 90 percent of its renewable power; and
WHEREAS, Alaska is home to over 50 hydroelectric facilities exceeding 480 megawatts of capacity, with some generating power for over a century; and
WHEREAS, hydropower is a cost-effective energy source that enhances energy diversity, offers adaptability to changing energy demands, and contributes to lowering energy expenses for Alaskan residents; and
WHEREAS, the State of Alaska is the owner of the two largest hydropower projects in the state at Bradley Lake and Snettisham, providing reliable and affordable energy to 75 percent of the population in our central region and to our state capital of Juneau; and
WHEREAS, through the Alaska Energy Authority, the State is increasing its hydroelectric production by expanding the Bradley Lake Project; and
WHEREAS, continued development and responsible stewardship of hydropower in Alaska will strengthen our energy security, improve electrical grid resilience, and affordable baseload power.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Mike Dunleavy, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF ALASKA, do hereby proclaim August 24, 2026 as:
Alaska Hydropower Day
in Alaska and urge all Alaskans to celebrate the vital role hydropower plays in energy security, economic growth, and affordable electricity in Alaska.
