WHEREAS, the State of Alaska is committed to protecting its residents and those visiting our great State by ensuring that our medical centers have a safe and sufficient supply of blood; and
WHEREAS, a local in-state accessible blood supply is crucial for treating those recovering from accidents, traumas, surgeries, and even some diseases; and
WHEREAS, one blood donation can help save as many as three lives, and although most of the population may be eligible to donate blood, only two percent of Alaskans donate blood annually; and
WHEREAS, we are grateful for the many donors who have played a vital role in saving innumerable lives in our state by donating blood; and
WHEREAS, medical personnel and patients benefit from committed public service and private organizations that facilitate blood donations, including Blood Bank of Alaska and Red Cross; and
WHEREAS, expanding blood donation participation to ensure we keep an adequate blood supply is critical for Alaska, and we encourage all eligible Alaskans to donate blood and help save lives.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Mike Dunleavy, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF ALASKA, do hereby proclaim September 4-10, 2023 as:
Alaska Blood Donation Week
in Alaska, and encourage all Alaskans to recognize the importance of maintaining a sufficient blood supply through the act of blood donation and community awareness.
