Motorcycle and Motor Scooter Awareness Month

WHEREAS, Alaska’s many road systems provide some of the most breathtaking views in the world, making Alaska an excellent location for motorcycle and motor scooter use; and

WHEREAS, many registered motorcyclists who undergo extensive training and testing in order to obtain a license call Alaska home and enjoy the roadways Alaska has to offer; and

WHEREAS, riders face a higher risk on the road than those operating vehicles. Statistics show that those operating vehicles are at fault in the majority of all accidents involving a motorcycle or motor scooter; and

WHEREAS, it is imperative that all motorists operate with caution and stay alert while traveling on Alaska’s roadways. Several Alaskan organizations are working to provide the necessary resources for all motorists to be safe drivers; and

WHEREAS, the Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) partners with the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF), whose mission is to ensure access to quality education and training and to advocate for a safer riding environment. Alaska Bikers Advocating Training and Education (ABATE) helps support the DMV’s efforts by administering motorcyclists endorsement testing and offering courses on motorcycle handling and safety; and

WHEREAS, the efforts of DMV, MSF, and ABATE prepare motorcyclists for safe riding, however, an increase in awareness, caution, and observance by drivers of vehicles is necessary to improve the safety of our roads for motorcyclists.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Mike Dunleavy, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF ALASKA, do hereby proclaim May 2020 as:

Motorcycle and Motor Scooter Awareness Month

in Alaska, and encourage all Alaskans to renew their commitment to safe driving practices, to watch for motorcyclists and motor scooters, and to be aware of all who share the road.
