Description: The council consists of at least 5 members appointed by Governor, including the Commissioner of the Department of Education and Early Development, 1 superintendent of a school district with a high concentration of military children, 1 representative from a military installation in Alaska, 1 representative of the Alaska State Legislature, and 1 representative of the executive branch of state government. The governor may also appoint members from other offices and stakeholder groups that the State Council considers appropriate. One voting representative from the Council will serve as the state’s compact commissioner, who is responsible for administering the Council. The military family education liaison designated by the Commissioner serves as ex officio, non-voting member. Function: The council works to provide for the coordination among state government agencies, local education agencies, and military installations concerning the state’s participation in, and compliance with, the terms of the Compact and the activities of the Interstate Commission on Educational Opportunity for Military Children.
