Fact Sheet Board: Workers’ Compensation Appeals Commission Board identification number: 225 Department: LABOR Authority: AS 23.30.007; AS 39.50.200 Status: Active Sunset date: Requirements: Legislative Confirmation and Financial Disclosure Prohibitions: Members of the commission must be U.S. citizens; as an Alaska resident for five-years immediately preceding the appointment. They must not have been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor related to workers’ compensation, and must have served on the Workers’ Compensation Board for at least 18 months. The Chair must meet all of these requirements (except the 18-month service requirement) and also must be licensed to practice law in Alaska as well as a member in good standing with the Alaska Bar Association, and must have been engaged in the active practice of law for at least five years with experience in workers’ compensation law. Term: 5 years Chair: Governor appoints Description: 5 Members are nominated by the Chief Administrative Law Judge and appointed by the Governor. The members shall be appointed as follows: A member appointed by the Governor as chair; two members who, because of their employment or affiliations, may be classified as a representative of employees covered by this chapter; and two members who, because of their employment or affiliations, may be classified as a representative of employers covered by this chapter. Function: The commission has jurisdiction to hear appeals from final decisions and orders of the Alaska Workers’ Compensation Board. Jurisdiction of the commission is limited to administrative appeals arising under this chapter. Special facts: Members may not simultaneously serve on the Alaska Workers’ Compensation Board.
