Term: 3 years Chair: Commission selects Description: The commission consists of 9 members appointed by the Governor who actively engaged in teaching profession for 5 years immediately preceding appointment, 5 classroom teachers, 1 principal, 1 superintendent, 1 department representative, and 1 higher education representative. Members are selected from recommendations from respective associations (refer to AS 14.20.410). The commission selects its chair. Function: The commission develops criteria of professional practices in areas of ethics, performance, professional services, and contractual obligations. The commission also holds hearings to judge and sanction educators not meeting standards established by the Commission. The commission may suspend or revoke certificates of educators based on reasons set out in AS 14.20.030; in case of an administrator, the commissioner must concur. Special facts: The commission serves in a quasi-judicial capacity. Members may be removed for misconduct, malfeasance or nonfeasance in office, or incapacity. Compensation: Standard Travel and Per Diem Admin leave; state reimburses district for more than 15 days Meetings: 3 meetings per year;1-1.5 days per meeting. Generally, the board meets in the fall, winter and spring.
