Description: The board consists of 7 members appointed by the Governor. The commission appoints the Executive Director, who is approved by the Governor. The commission elects the board chair. Function: The board works to eliminate and prevent discrimination in employment, in practices by the state or it’s political subdivisions, in credit and financing practices, in places of public accommodation, and in the sale, lease or rental or real property; to process complaints from the public, hold hearings and order appropriate relief, and make an overall assessment, at least every three years of the progress toward equal employment opportunity by every state department. Results of the assessment shall be included in the annual report made under AS 18.80.150. Special facts: The commission is a quasi-judicial agency. The Attorney General serves as legal counsel. Compensation: Standard Travel and Per Diem Meetings: One annual mtg. in March, plus two additional mtgs. (usually summer and fall) per yr., 8 days max.; 10-15 hearing decisions per year.
