Description: The board consists of 7 members appointed by Governor on the basis of interest in public affairs, good judgment, knowledge, and ability in the field of action of the board, and with a view to providing diversity of interest and points of view in the membership. Members must be residents of the state, appointed without regard to political affiliation or geographical location of residence. The Commissioner of the Dept. of Fish and Game is not a member, but serves as ex-officio secretary. Appointments must be made by April 1st. Terms begin July 1. The Joint Boards of Fish and Game select and nominate the Commissioner of Fish and Game to the governor for appointment. Function: Conservation and development of fishery resources. Special facts: This board is a regulatory body. A quorum consists of a majority of the members of the board. Members may be removed only for inefficiency, neglect of duty, or misconduct in office (AS 16.05.280). Statute requires board to hold at least one meeting a year where the board selects time and place. The Board of Fisheries generally meets four to six times each year, for approximately 33-45 days. The Board of Fisheries and the Board of Game occasionally meet in joint session. The Board of Fisheries may meet at any time upon the call of the commissioner or upon the request of two board members. If a vacancy arises on the board, the governor must appoint a replacement within 30 days. Compensation: Standard Travel and Per Diem Range 20A for board meetings; 1/2 Range 20A for other mtgs.
