First Responder Appreciation Day October 28, 2020 WHEREAS, individuals, both volunteer and career, including police, fire, emergency, medical services, search and rescue, and other public safety organizations, come together as First Responders to aid the public in the event of an emergency; and WHEREAS, First Responders put their lives on the line each and every day to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all Alaskans; and WHEREAS, these courageous men and women are well-trained and equipped to handle a variety of situations. They are the first to arrive and assist in an emergency situation and, are the first line of defense against all public safety threats; and WHEREAS, with a variety of remote communities and severe weather conditions, First Responders play a critical role in keeping Alaskans safe in both urban and rural areas; and WHEREAS, this year we have all experienced an unprecedented and faceless threat with COVID-19, and our First Responders are, and will continue to be, an integral component to Alaska’s COVID-19 response effort; involved in testing, delivering telehealth services, and responding to patients affected by the pandemic, while putting themselves at risk of contracting the virus; and WHEREAS, despite the enormous challenges, inherent risks, and devastatingly stressful jobs, these men and women continue to provide vital services, compassion, and life-saving intervention to those in need; and WHEREAS, we appreciate the incredible sacrifice and efforts of Alaska’s dedicated First Responders who stand to protect the lives of all Alaskans. We are especially grateful to those who have given their lives in service to others. We also extend our sincere gratitude to the family members of our First Responders who sacrifice so much so that we can have safe homes and communities. NOW THEREFORE, I, Mike Dunleavy, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF ALASKA, do hereby proclaim October 28, 2020 as: First Responder Appreciation Day in Alaska, and encourage all Alaskans to recognize the vital role of Alaska’s First Responders in keeping our children, families, and communities safe.
