Hire A Veteran Month October 30, 2017 WHEREAS, veterans and military service members are an integral part of Alaska’s economy and social foundation. Whenever called upon to defend our nation’s security at home or abroad, the men and women who serve in the U.S. Navy, Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, National Guard, and Reserves have responded immediately and effectively, placing national interests above their own; and WHEREAS, Alaska is the proud home of over 68,000 veterans, the largest per capita population in our great nation; and WHEREAS, over 50,000 veterans are employed in Alaska, making significant contributions to businesses with exceptional skills, demonstrating they are a dedicated, fast-learning, and highly-profitable segment of our workforce; and WHEREAS, the State of Alaska is supportive of initiatives promoting veteran hire. The Alaska Job Center Network has assisted over 9,000 veterans in the past year and continues to offer priority of service to veterans and eligible spouses statewide; and WHEREAS: G.K. Chesterton stated, “Courage is almost a contradiction in terms. It means a strong desire to live taking the form of readiness to die.” We are forever indebted to our veterans for their courageous service to Alaska and the United States of America, and in gratitude, we honor them and acknowledge their significant contributions to our economic future. NOW THEREFORE, I, Bill Walker, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF ALASKA, do hereby proclaim November 2017 as: Hire A Veteran Month in Alaska, and encourage all employers to provide employment opportunities for veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces.
