Teacher Appreciation Week April 27, 2017 WHEREAS, Alaska’s children are precious, representing the hope and future of our state, and providing a quality education is among the State of Alaska’s most important constitutional requirements; and WHEREAS, teachers fill a valuable role in the lives of Alaska’s young people. They mold future citizens through guidance and education and have a unique opportunity to inspire Alaska’s students to achieve success now and in the future; and WHEREAS, teachers encounter students of widely differing backgrounds and can serve as educator, mentor, role model, and counselor to students, positively impacting their development and progression to adulthood; and WHEREAS, teaching is a great responsibility that requires compassion, critical thinking, and countless hours preparing lessons and evaluating progress. Teaching also involves the support of parents, administrators, support staff, and members of the community; and WHEREAS, the Board of Education and Early Development leading our efforts in a public process to address Alaska’s Education Challenge to ensure that Alaska’s students have equal opportunities and learn and succeed. We are grateful for the educators, parents, and many other Alaskans who are providing input into this process as we comprehensively analyze and reconsider our public education system in 2017; and WHEREAS, we greatly appreciate the dedication of every one of Alaska’s 9011 public school teachers, as well as private school teachers and parents who educate their children at home, to be a constant positive influence on the lives of their students. We celebrate their passion and drive to provide a high quality education that will equip students and our state to excel in the future. NOW THEREFORE, I, Bill Walker, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF ALASKA, do hereby proclaim May 1-5, 2017 as: Teacher Appreciation Week in Alaska, and encourage all Alaskans to acknowledge the impact of Alaska’s teachers and express appreciation for their hard work and dedication to Alaska’s students.
