Alaska Agriculture Day April 24, 2017 WHEREAS, agriculture has played an essential role in the sustainability and growth of communities throughout Alaska for decades; and WHEREAS, our local farmers, producers, and growers have a tradition of providing fresh, quality products that enhance the overall state economy. Alaska Grown products keep dollars in Alaska and help to maintain competition in the marketplace; and WHEREAS, agriculture is expanding and growing throughout Alaska as new technologies and methods have emerged for growing and producing food in some of the harshest environments in the country; and WHEREAS, the agriculture industry includes Alaskans who raise crops and livestock, and also those who supply specialized equipment and seeds, and those who transport, process, and market these products. Each plays an important role in the industry and our economy; and WHEREAS, agriculture is vital for increased food security and ensuring that Alaskans can support themselves during natural disasters or other emergencies; and WHEREAS, Alaskans have worked countless hours to develop agriculture in our unique Arctic environment and Alaska’s farmers provide local, safe, healthy, and high quality products that we eat, use, and wear every day; and WHEREAS, we encourage Alaskans to support all sectors of agriculture across Alaska throughout the year. The Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Agriculture provides more information about Alaska Grown products on their new website at http://buyalaskagrown.com/. NOW THEREFORE, I, Bill Walker, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF ALASKA, do hereby proclaim May 2, 2017 as: Alaska Agriculture Day and encourage all Alaskans to recognize the contributions of Alaska’s farmers, producers, and growers.
