WHEREAS, school counselors are employed in many of Alaska’s public and private schools to help students reach their full academic potential and learn to be productive contributors within their communities; and
WHEREAS, school counselors can work closely with teachers, administrators, fellow educators, and parents to assist students in exploring their potential, developing their natural abilities and interests, and setting realistic academic and career goals; and
WHEREAS, as active community members, school counselors seek to identify, utilize, and promote community resources that can complement and enhance school programs, and they also can help parents focus on ways to further the educational, personal, and social growth of their children; and
WHEREAS, the role of school counselor can often be filled by a teacher or administrator who also works with students on a daily basis and has a unique insight into a student’s level of development and areas in which he or she may have room for growth; and
WHEREAS, this year’s theme, “School Counseling: Helping Students Realize Their Potential,” highlights the profound impact school counselors can have on the lives of Alaska’s students.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Bill Walker, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF ALASKA, do hereby proclaim February 6-10, 2017 as:
Alaska School Counseling Week
in Alaska, and encourage all Alaskans to recognize the efforts and achievements of dedicated school counselors across our great state.
