WHEREAS, proper septic system use and routine care are vital to protecting public health, preserving Alaska’s highly valued groundwater, lakes, streams and waterways, and avoiding costly repairs that can result from neglect; and
WHEREAS, over 30 percent of Alaska’s homes and businesses utilize septic systems to treat and dispose of wastewater, serving approximately 250,000 Alaskans; and
WHEREAS, wastewater professionals in Alaska use their expertise in the design, installation, maintenance and regulation of septic systems in our state; and
WHEREAS, the Environmental Protection Agency’s SepticSmart program used by the Alaska Departmental of Environmental Conservation educates homeowners and business owners about the need for proper septic system use and routine maintenance and encourages Alaskans to follow these practices; and
WHEREAS, residents and the environment of Alaska benefit from properly designed, installed, operated, and maintained septic systems.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Bill Walker, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF ALASKA, do hereby proclaim September 19-23, 2016 as:
in Alaska, and encourage all Alaska homeowners and business owners with septic systems to utilize the SepticSmart program to educate themselves as to proper maintenance of their systems, and ensure appropriate treatment and disposal of wastewater.
