Overview
For many, Alaska is a land of great hope and opportunity. But for some, their lives are marked by fear, shame and despair – trademarks of domestic violence and sexual assault. Our state is currently experiencing epidemic levels of this evil – and it’s up to each one of us to stop it.
My administration is taking a comprehensive approach to stop the epidemic. We have submitted several pieces of legislation that addresses the domestic violence and sexual assault epidemic in three key ways:
- First, we’ll beef-up law enforcement and enforce tougher prosecution.
- Second, we will protect survivors and help them heal.
- Third, we will focus on prevention and education.
As a society – as Alaskans – we must change our practice of preserving silence. And, we must promote a culture of respect that will not tolerate this conduct.
The first step to prevention is raising awareness.
We’re launching Alaskans Choose Respect, a statewide effort to end the epidemic of domestic violence and sexual assault. Partnering with non-profits, legislators, stakeholders, and community members, I’ll lead a march from the steps of the capitol to raise awareness and call for a cultural shift. A shift towards honor and respect for all Alaskans.
Events will take place simultaneously across Alaska. I’ll provide more information in my next email and on my website in the days to come, but I am challenging all Alaskans to step up – to march forward into a new day, when Alaskans live with hope and opportunity, rather than fear and despair. Together, we can make a difference.
