10th Governor of Alaska
For many, Alaska is a land of great hope and opportunity. But for some, their lives are marked by fear, shame and despair – trademarks of domestic violence and sexual assault. Our state is currently experiencing epidemic levels of this evil – and it’s up to each one of us to stop it.
My administration is taking a comprehensive approach to stop the epidemic. We have submitted several pieces of legislation that addresses the domestic violence and sexual assault epidemic in three key ways:
As a society – as Alaskans – we must change our practice of preserving silence. And, we must promote a culture of respect that will not tolerate this conduct.
Dear Fellow Alaskans,
On the last Thursday of each March, thousands of Alaskans across the state join together and march to end the epidemic of domestic violence, sexual assault, and child sexual abuse. From toddlers to elders, a collective voice is heard across Alaska saying, “We Choose Respect! No more harm!” These events would not be possible without the commitment of local leaders.
Sandy and I are encouraged and deeply grateful to all the leaders and community volunteers from over 100 communities who have joined with us to grow this initiative since its humble beginnings in 2010. You carry a message of hope and healing for the many victims and survivors who have suffered from these crimes. Today, I challenge you to speak up in your community, at your job, at your place of worship, or in your own home. In order to truly change social norms, we need to reach all Alaskans, and it starts with you.
Together, we stand for safer Alaska homes and stronger families.
Best regards,

Sean Parnell
Governor
