WHEREAS, pharmacy is one of the oldest and most trusted health professions, involving the scientific and clinical use of medications; and
WHEREAS, currently there are more than 300,000 pharmacists licensed in the United States and 1,047 licensed pharmacists in Alaska. Alaskan pharmacists are primarily employed in hospitals, nursing homes, drug stores, and with the Indian Health Service; and
WHEREAS, pharmacists have extensive education and expertise on drug and medication therapy, providing services to ensure medicines are used safely and effectively; and
WHEREAS, modern medications are complex and sophisticated and it is important that Alaskans are knowledgeable about the medications they take, and that they utilize the wealth of knowledge that their local pharmacist can provide on drug interactions, side effects, risks, and benefits; and
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sean Parnell, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim October 2013 as:
in Alaska, and encourage all Alaskans to acknowledge the contributions of pharmacists to the health and well-being of our communities.
