Senior Fall Prevention Week

Effective Date: Monday, September 9th, 2013

WHEREAS, Alaska’s seniors are valued members of our community; and

WHEREAS, older Alaskans are the fastest growing age group in our state; and

WHEREAS, falling is the leading cause of nonfatal injuries for Alaskan seniors over 65, and also the leading cause of fatal injury for Alaskans 75 and older; and

WHEREAS, lack of strength and balance, the use of four or more medications, vision impairment, tripping hazards in the home, and poor hearing are risk factors for falls; and

WHEREAS, Alaska’s harsh winter conditions can increase the likelihood of a fall. It is the responsibility of all Alaskans to keep their sidewalks clear of snow and ice, and to offer assistance to senior community members who may need assistance maintaining their walks and driveways; and

WHEREAS, fall prevention strategies can greatly improve the quality and health of seniors’ lives by alleviating the stress of falling and giving them the confidence to be independent.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sean Parnell, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim September 15-21, 2013 as:

Senior Fall Prevention Week

in Alaska, and encourage all Alaskans to do their part to prevent falls and raise awareness about the risk of falls for Alaskan seniors.
