Tsunami Preparedness Week

Effective Date: Friday, March 15th, 2013

WHEREAS, Alaska is the most seismically active state in the United States and one of the world’s most seismically active regions. Alaska is home to three of the twelve largest earthquakes since 1900 and ten of the fifteen largest earthquakes in the United States’ history; and

WHEREAS, during the last year, Alaska residents were once again reminded of tsunami hazards when warnings were issued for Southeast Alaska on October 27th after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake south of Ketchikan generated a large tsunami in British Columbia with smaller impacts in Alaska, and on January 4th when a magnitude 7.5 earthquake west of Craig prompted many cities in Southeast to evacuate; and

WHEREAS, these events followed the March 11, 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami which claimed over 15,800 lives in Japan. The economic loss in Japan was estimated at 309 billion U.S. dollars. The personal, financial, and environmental impact of the tsunami is staggering; and

WHEREAS, because of Alaska’s high tsunami threat, following the 1964 “Good Friday” earthquake the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) established the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center. Today the Center issues tsunami advisories and warnings for both coasts of the United States and Canada, as well as for the Gulf of Mexico, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico; and

WHEREAS, because of Alaskans’ efforts and the strong partnership of local, State, and federal officials, many coastal communities are recognized today as “TsunamiReady.” The TsunamiReady program promotes tsunami hazard preparedness through community awareness.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sean Parnell, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim March 24-30, 2013 as:

Tsunami Preparedness Week

in Alaska, and urge Alaskans to plan for tsunamis, educate themselves on the appropriate response to tsunami warnings, and to follow those warnings when they occur.
