Disability Employment Awareness Month

Effective Date: Monday, October 1st, 2012

WHEREAS, employment offers opportunities for greater independence, empowerment, and prosperity for Alaskans; and

WHEREAS, in order for all Alaskans to realize their potential, meaningful employment opportunities must be available to Alaskans with disabilities, and discrimination against people with disabilities in employment, housing, health care, and other public areas is prohibited by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990; and

WHEREAS, workplaces welcoming the talents of people with disabilities are a critical part of our efforts to build safe, supportive communities and a strong economy; and

WHEREAS, the State of Alaska strives to be a model employer of qualified people with disabilities and has established a State as a Model Employer Task Force consisting of members from the Governor’s Council on Disabilities and Special Education, the State Division of Personnel and Labor Relations, the State Americans with Disabilities Act Coordinator’s office, and the State Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, and

WHEREAS, the Task Force will continue to develop strategies to increase the pool of qualified applicants with disabilities through targeted recruitment and outreach activities and will review best practices and innovative strategies in other programs designed to provide reasonable accommodations and an inclusive and accessible work environment for workers with disabilities while providing equal opportunity and cost savings, and enhancing productivity, and

WHEREAS, the United States Congress designated October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month to encourage the integration of Americans with disabilities into the workforce. Activities during this month reinforce the value and talent added to our workplaces and communities by people with disabilities, and affirm Alaska’s commitment to all of our citizens.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sean Parnell, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim October 2012 as:

Disability Employment Awareness Month

in Alaska, and call upon employers and community organizations in Alaska to observe this month with appropriate programs and activities throughout the year, and to hire qualified Alaskans with disabilities.
