Voter Registration Day
Effective Date: Tuesday, September 25th, 2012
WHEREAS, the right of citizens to elect officials to represent them in local, State, and national positions is a cornerstone of our American form of government and a fundamental principle to preserving personal liberty guaranteed by the United States and Alaska Constitutions; and
WHEREAS, registering to vote enables eligible citizens to exercise their right to vote; and
WHEREAS, while over 499,000 Alaskan residents are currently registered to vote, approximately 23,500 additional citizens are eligible, but have not yet registered; and
WHEREAS, the voter registration process in Alaska is convenient and accessible, with applications available online and at Department of Motor Vehicles offices, city and borough clerks offices, public assistance agencies, State agencies serving people with disabilities, participating public libraries, tribal government offices, United States Armed Forces recruitment offices, and political party offices, and from voter registrars; and
WHEREAS, the State of Alaska has online tools available for citizens to verify their registration status; and
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sean Parnell, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim September 25, 2012 as:
Voter Registration Day
and encourage all eligible Alaskans to register to vote.
