Alaska Book Week
Effective Date: Saturday, October 6th, 2012
WHEREAS, a strong literary tradition has always been the hallmark of a reflective and engaged society; and
WHEREAS, highlighting the importance of the literary tradition has taken on more urgency in an era of electronic communications and digital media; and
WHEREAS, Alaska has a significant community of writers and a diverse and developing body of literature communicating our state’s uniqueness to the rest of the world; and
WHEREAS, Alaska’s authors and their books contribute to discussion about our state, encouraging the exploration and preservation of Alaska’s history and culture; and
WHEREAS, creative writing by and about Alaskans provides an ideal opportunity for Alaska’s children to increase their literacy skills while learning more about their home state and also encourages interest in the state of Alaska from other states and countries; and
WHEREAS, support of writers and their work enhances the state’s economy and makes it possible for creative professionals to remain in Alaska, enriching the culture of Alaska; and
WHEREAS, a celebration of books by Alaskans and about Alaska inspires the efforts of writers throughout the state, including traditionally underserved writers in rural Alaska.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sean Parnell, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim October 6-13, 2012 as:
Alaska Book Week
and encourage all individuals to celebrate Alaska’s unique literary tradition in their homes, libraries, and communities.
