Energy Efficiency Awareness Month

Effective Date: Monday, October 1st, 2012

WHEREAS, Alaska is blessed with a wealth of natural energy resources, but nevertheless faces some of the highest energy costs in the nation; and

WHEREAS, affordable energy is vitally important to Alaskan businesses and communities, and to Alaskan families and individuals, who rely on fuel and electrical generation for heat, lighting, and transportation year-round and especially during the cold northern winters; and

WHEREAS, in 2010, Alaska instituted a comprehensive statewide policy to address Alaska’s energy challenges in coming years. The development of conventional fuels, pursuit of renewable energy technologies, and implementation of the State’s conservation objectives offer economic and employment benefits to countless Alaskans and are all key components to successfully meeting Alaska’s energy needs; and

WHEREAS, this policy sets goals for Alaska to derive 50 percent of its electrical generation and transmission from renewable resources by 2025, to develop alternative means of electrical generation through new projects and research, to increase energy efficiency by 15 percent by 2020, and to increase public knowledge of energy efficiency; and

WHEREAS, energy efficiency guidelines are an effective way for Alaskans to conserve and lower energy costs at work and home. We encourage Alaskans to obtain energy audits, weatherize buildings, rely on energy efficient lighting, use programmable thermostats, reduce hot water heater temperature settings to 120 °F, and replace and renovate outdated electrical systems.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sean Parnell, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim October, 2012 as:

Energy Efficiency Awareness Month

in Alaska, and encourage Alaskans to strive for increased energy efficiency at home and at work as an essential part of creating a sustainable energy future for our state.
