September 11th Commemoration Day
Effective Date: Monday, September 10th, 2012
WHEREAS, Americans can never forget the horrific terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001; and
WHEREAS, we will always honor the memories of nearly 3,000 American men, women, and children whose lives were cut short in a single day, and grieve their loss with their families, friends, and loved ones; and
WHEREAS, we recognize the heroism and determination of the firefighters, emergency medical personnel, police, and others who did their utmost to save the lives of others. We remember the sacrifice of hundreds of first responders in New York City who died while rescuing victims, many knowing they would not return; and
WHEREAS, the courage and spirit of the passengers on United Flight 93 also saved an unknown number of lives when they successfully averted an attack believed to have been intended for the United States Capitol, the seat of American representative government; and
WHEREAS, following the attacks, Americans everywhere came together to donate blood, supplies, resources, and skills to assist the injured, and supported those impacted with prayers and compassion; and
WHEREAS, the international community mourned with America and reached out with an outpouring of support and compassion. Ninety-three nations lost citizens in the attacks; and
WHEREAS, we are grateful for the blessings of freedom and the many privileges we enjoy as citizens, and we thank those who protect the citizens and freedoms of our great nation. America’s servicemen and women are vigilant in the defense of the innocent, courageous in the face of the unknown, and steadfast in their devotion to our people. We honor their service; and
WHEREAS, across the state, Alaskans will hold events to commemorate the anniversary of the attacks and reinforce our commitment never to forget; and
WHEREAS, the anniversary of the attacks cause us to ponder our national heritage of freedom, patriotism, and unity as a people. We will not allow terror to dictate our future.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sean Parnell, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim September 11, 2012 as:
September 11th Commemoration Day
in Alaska, and urge all Alaskans on the anniversary of this day to reaffirm their commitment to our nation and one another through good deeds, service, and charity, and reflect on the resilience and strength of the United States of America.
