United States Coast Guard Appreciation Day

Effective Date: Saturday, August 4th, 2012

WHEREAS, the United States Coast Guard was formed on August 4, 1790, for the purpose of protecting the maritime sovereignty of the United States, and continues to this day as an indispensable and unique force carrying out a variety of civil and military duties; and

WHEREAS, being the only military entity within the Department of Homeland Security, the nation’s primary enforcer of maritime laws and boundaries and preeminent search and rescue organization, completing an average of 5,500 rescues annually and having saved well over one million lives since its inception, the United States Coast Guard is of vital importance to the nation; and

WHEREAS, 75 percent of Alaska’s population lives in communities located along the state’s coastline. With an Exclusive Economic Zone of 900,000 square miles and 44,000 miles of shoreline, the length of Alaska’s coastline exceeds that of all the other states combined and requires vigilant monitoring and protection; and

WHEREAS, men and women in Alaska’s District 17 of the United States Coast Guard serve in one of the most challenging maritime environments anywhere in the world. Working on air stations, cutters, marine safety units, aids to navigation teams, small boat stations, and support facilities, members have rendered invaluable service to Alaskans by guarding our maritime borders, rescuing those in peril, and protecting Alaska’s economy and environment. From the waters of Southeast Alaska to the ice-covered bays of the Arctic, their courage and dedication is known by all; and

WHEREAS, last winter the United States Coast Guard assisted in an unprecedented emergency delivery of fuel to the remote community of Nome, breaking over 300 miles of sea ice in an historic effort and proving their adherence to the motto of the United States Coast Guard, “Semper Paratus;” and

WHEREAS, men and women of the United States Coast Guard, along with their families, are a welcome presence in Alaska. Through the “Coast Guard Arctic Shield 2012” effort, members will undertake public water safety training and service outreach to 27 Alaska communities, will enhance our nation’s Arctic presence through operations, and assess capabilities to ensure continued operational excellence. We appreciate their many contributions to our state and honor their dedicated service.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sean Parnell, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim August 4, 2012 as:

United States Coast Guard Appreciation Day

in Alaska, and encourage Alaskans to recognize the importance of the United States Coast Guard’s service and share their appreciation with members of their acquaintance.
