Apprenticeship Awareness Month

Effective Date: Wednesday, August 1st, 2012

WHEREAS, apprenticeships combine classroom education, on the job training, and progressive compensation, providing an effective means for Alaskans to gain skills that are valuable to themselves and others across the globe; and

WHEREAS, the State of Alaska values apprenticeship programs because they provide a pathway to individual economic opportunity and personal fulfillment in the workplace; and

WHEREAS, both the private sector and the State continue to invest significant resources in apprenticeships; and

WHEREAS, this year marks the 75th anniversary of the National Apprenticeship Act, which instituted apprenticeship standards and established apprenticeships as an effective strategy for workforce development; and

WHEREAS, more skilled workers are needed across all geographic areas and industries in Alaska, and are integral to the health of our economy and society; and

WHEREAS, by encouraging the development of our workforce through all means, including apprenticeships, we will open doors of opportunity for Alaska’s citizens, families, and communities.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sean Parnell, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim August 2012 as:

Apprenticeship Awareness Month

in Alaska, and encourage Alaskans to recognize the value of apprenticeship and on the job training programs, and the contributions of skilled tradesmen across our state.
