Alaska Trails Day

Effective Date: Saturday, June 2nd, 2012

WHEREAS, National Trails Day is recognized each year on the first Saturday of June; and

WHEREAS, trails provide an opportunity to bring our friends and family together to celebrate and enjoy the natural beauty of our great state; and

WHEREAS, people of all ages and abilities can enjoy trail activities together; and

WHEREAS, in Alaska, we are fortunate to have an abundance of trails for year round outdoor recreational opportunities including, hiking, bicycling, skiing, horseback riding, hunting, fishing, and berry picking; and

WHEREAS, trails benefit the health and wellness of our residents, provide alternative transportation routes, provide access to subsistence activities, and attract visitors to our state from around the world, promoting growth and prosperity to our economy; and

WHEREAS, National Trails Day increases the awareness of our natural environment and the importance of parks, greenways, and trail systems for our children and future generations to learn, exercise, and explore.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sean Parnell, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim June 2, 2012 as:

Alaska Trails Day

in Alaska, and encourage Alaskans to participate in a local Trails Day event, and to enjoy nearby trails year round.
