Great Outdoors Month

Effective Date: Friday, June 1st, 2012

WHEREAS, Alaska is defined by its unparalleled landscape, and every summer residents and visitors alike embark on adventures to explore our state’s vast wilderness and experience the natural wonders of the Last Frontier; and

WHEREAS, Great Outdoors Month is an opportunity to celebrate Alaska’s natural treasures and enjoy the healthy benefits and memorable experiences of being outdoors with family and friends; and

WHEREAS, Alaska offers an abundance of outdoor summer recreational activities, and the extended daylight hours provide ample opportunities to fish, hike, boat, camp, and otherwise enjoy our state’s magnificent scenery and the healthy benefits of outdoor recreation; and

WHEREAS, Alaskans play an important role in caring for our natural spaces. Across our state, Alaskans have demonstrated dedication to protecting our wilderness spaces for future recreation, the responsible use of our natural resources, and educating our youth on the spectacular wonders that surround us; and

WHEREAS, outdoor recreation is vital to Alaska’s economy, and to the health and well-being of our residents.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sean Parnell, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim June 2012 as:

Great Outdoors Month

in Alaska, and encourage all Alaskans to observe this month with appropriate programs and activities, and to spend time enjoying the great outdoors.
