Make-A-Wish Week

Effective Date: Monday, April 23rd, 2012

WHEREAS, Alaska’s children are our greatest and most precious resource. It is the responsibility of our society to cherish, nurture, and help each child grow to achieve their full potential; and

WHEREAS, the Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich their human experience with hope, strength, and joy; and

WHEREAS, the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Alaska began in 2000, and nearly 300 Alaskan children have realized their wishes and nearly 200 other children from across the globe have come to Alaska to have their wish granted; and

WHEREAS, these wishes also represent thousands of parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, classmates, and friends who are impacted and given hope by the power of a wish come true; and

WHEREAS, 30 children across Alaska are currently in the process of having their wishes granted and ten children from other states are planning to visit Alaska for their wish this summer; and

WHEREAS, the cost of granting these wishes is paid for entirely by the generosity of charitable donations and in-kind contributions from individuals who believe you can help “share the power of a wish;” and

WHEREAS, since its inception in 1980, the Make-A-Wish Foundation has granted more than 250,000 wishes worldwide.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sean Parnell, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim April 23-29, 2012 as:

Make-A-Wish Week

in Alaska, and encourage all Alaskans to recognize the life-changing contributions the Make-A-Wish Foundation performs in the lives of Alaska’s Wish children, and to join me in dedicating their energies to cherishing and supporting Alaska’s children.
