Lemonade Day
Effective Date: Sunday, May 6th, 2012
WHEREAS, Alaska’s youth are the bright future of our great state, and it is the responsibility of our communities to inspire and encourage them to achieve their full potential; and
WHEREAS, educational opportunities for Alaska’s children to learn and apply entrepreneurial thinking are vital to creating a foundation for their success in today’s economy; and
WHEREAS, by infusing our youth with the spirit of enterprise and teaching them basic business and entrepreneurial skills, we can help them to become successful, contributing members of their communities; and
WHEREAS, Lemonade Day began in 2007 and has grown to become a nationwide entrepreneurial program to teach our youth how to start, own, and operate their own businesses through the act of building and running a lemonade stand. By following the “Spend, Save, and Share” philosophy, youth learn to set goals, develop a business plan, establish a budget, seek investors, provide customer service, and give back to their community; and
WHEREAS, this year marks Alaska’s first statewide participation in Lemonade Day, and families, businesses, schools, youth organizations, faith-based communities, neighborhoods, educational institutions, and government agencies are uniting for a common purpose – to train the next generation of entrepreneurs; and
WHEREAS, across Alaska on the first Sunday in May, Alaskan youth participants will gain valuable entrepreneurial skills, experience fiscal and community responsibility, and give back to their communities through a donation of a portion of their profits to a local charity of their choice.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sean Parnell, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim May 6, 2012 as:
Lemonade Day
in Alaska, and encourage Alaska’s educators, parents, and community members to join our youth and participate in Lemonade Day. Together, we can support Alaska’s youth as they learn to be productive members of society, and express our commitment to their successful future.
